Before proceeding with this post, I would like to thank the OONinja for his great help at http://www.oooninja.com/2008/01/convert-openxml-docx-etc-in-linux-using.html which is enabling me to do this on my own.
OOXML Files in OpenOffice.org
For those of us still using OpenOffice.org version 2.x, native OOXML file support is not available. This is promised to be a standard component in OpenOffice.org 3.0 (which was originally available as Release Candidate 3 http://download.openoffice.org/680/–a now defunct link). Note that the OOXML format is one that Microsoft unveiled almost 2 years ago now in the MS Office 2007 suite. OpenOffice.org is now available for download at http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html
Installing and using the softwares mentioned in the above blog is the easiest way I’ve seen (so far) to read these files.
