Canon .MOD Files

Canon MOD Files and YouTube

I tried uploading Canon .MOD files from my Canon FS200 video recorder to YouTube.com.  It worked flawlessly!  Why?

If you’re looking at cameras that record video to this file type or you already own one, this following link is very useful.

Basically it turns out that .MOD files are containers for MPEG2-class video at standard definition.  For my FS200, it’s 480i video at a variety of qualities (including widescreen).  This is completely native to YouTube and can be easily converted.

Even better, since some video editors clearly only check against extension, this renders the YouTube editor a highly viable option.  Some wise editing with the FFMpeg tool at command line renders this video a natural upload to YouTube.
